We can be certain that God will give us the strength and resources we need to live through any situation in life that He ordains. The will of God will never take us where the grace of God cannot sustain us.
- Billy Graham
Three years ago I arrived in Haiti for the first time with no knowledge of the crazy path God was about to take me on. It was on that trip that I first met 13 incredible children and the incredible Haiti Awake staff who would become people I consider my family and closest friends.
For those of you new to this story... in 2016 the Mission Made team took our first trip to Haiti to visit one of our artisan partners. It was during this trip that we saw clearly that we were being called to truly invest in this country and these people. We began working diligently to expand our artisan development programs and have since been able to help create and sustain over 200 artisan jobs throughout Haiti. We travel to Haiti several times a year to work with our artisans on design, development, and community impact efforts.
Each trip is unique and special, but this past week in Haiti was much different than we could have ever anticipated.
I arrived in Haiti on June 16th with a laundry list of to-do items, scheduled visits with several of our artisan groups, and a production plan of over 500 pieces of hand-stamped products all within 1 week. But, our plans quickly shifted upon receiving news that the Haiti Awake Children were being removed from their home and we needed to immediately find a new home for them.
Plans were changed. Appointments canceled. Production Paused.
Stop and make way for God's plans.
Our lunch ended abruptly and we began the search for what would be next... after a few short hours we crossed a gate into an answered prayer, proof of God's providence, and hope for a brighter future.
This AMAZING house has become home to Hait Awake's 13 children. It additionally will help house our staff, our chickens, our teams, and our production. The only problem was, $10,000 in rent for the year was due up front in order to secure the house. We prayed and decided to post a GoFundMe to help raise the funds. 24 hours later we sat tearfully joyful as we hit our goal and were able to ensure the children would be in a beautiful, safe, secure environment. Within 4 days we were able to help raise $22,005 thanks to the generosity of our community and followers.
This trip was not what we had planned, but THANK GOD it wasn't.
Within our one week in Haiti we;
- Helped raise $22,005 in support of Haiti Awake
- Produced over 300 pieces of jewelry
- Completed training and development with our Mission Made Haiti artisans
- Visited the 2nd Story Market
- Restocked our Metal Art Collection by visiting our sweet friends Billy & Vladimir
- Moved 13 children and 64 chickens (including a breakdown & rebuild of beds, furniture, and a chicken coop)
- Scored some AMAZING handmade products at a local artisan co-op
and so much more.
We are beyond grateful to Haiti Awake for the amazing work they are doing, the incredible opportunity that they provided to us during this trip, and for being amazing partners to Mission Made.
Stay tuned for tons of amazing new handmade Haitian products!
"We never want to lose that. The intentionality behind our products is what makes us who we are. That's why each time your Mission Made Subscription Box finds its way to you; it will feel different. Because it is."
At Mission Made Gifts we truly believe that relationships matter. Our vision since the start has been about creating jobs, restoring hope, and empowering people, and we believe that the best way to do that is to develop meaningful relationships. Each year the Mission Made team packs up suitcases of jewelry and other artisan items to attend the Excel 401(k) Conference in Las Vegas. Alongside our partners with Rekon Intelligence, we are able to share the Mission Made story and provide conference attendees and members of the financial industry an opportunity to learn about how they can approach client gift gifting with a purposeful and meaningful mindset.
Each of our Mission Made trips to Haiti have been alongside Haiti Awake, and during that time we have been able to grow in our relationships with the staff the local community. Haiti Awake is an incredible organization that works to “equip local Christians to reach their communities and their own country through showing Christ’s love in action.” We quickly realized that we didn’t need to create, start, or manage anything, we simply needed to allow our Haitian friends to use their knowledge and skills to make an impact within their owncommunity.
